It’s important to just let life happen.
Life is challenging this year – things are not slowing down after 4/15. This is nuts.
Thanks.
Wonderful happenings!
These are posts written for now. They are unlikely to be relevant, but just be writing about the day or whatever. They will likely only be short term posts, but some might stay just because they’re cool or I lose track of them.
I did my first mertup last night. It was very successful. I didn’t post what I would be wearing or how to find us. Oops.
Last summer I made one to two events per week. I don’t think I’ll do that this summer, mostly because work and business are both busy, pretty much always, but also because I’m enjoying hanging out with non-meetup friends. I need more if those, though.
Maybe I’ll delegate things. Idk – time will tell.
I was going to Aqua tonight for 80s night. I asked Allaina to be ready on time at 10:00. Several times. I don’t think I’m going to pick her up anymore.
But around 10:45, we finally made it to Aqua. Unfortunately, my 80s outfit included some casual white sneakers. I should given up, but I ran home, changed shoes, and was back by midnight.
They didn’t play 80s. They played Billy Jean and Journey once.
I figured some of my 80s fan friends would be there, but no such luck. I did run into some people I didn’t expect to see, which was nice.
Also, Aqua ducks at 80s nights.
Well I’m sure you’ve all heard me belly-aching about how busy I am, and that’s all good and well. But like my dad will tell me:
I do it to myself, so don’t feel bad or anything, but DO hang out when we’re able.
I am doing a lot right now. I just hired my first EE, which is pretty cool. I’ve had a lot of mentors, so I’m actually very good at supervising, even though I’ve had no supervising experience, officially.
She really enjoys it. Her name is Les, for short. Last week, she worked her first day. We took care of employment stuff right away, then went to a short office networking event, then went on a tour of the office. It was the Edina office.
Then her second day was going to a class at the MNCPA. She was surprised that I paid for the class and for her time to attend.
This week, she prepped some practice returns. She also got her SundbergTC computer. She liked how it came with a note that said welcome and told her password. On Monday, she and my editor met me and my photographer in the Bloomington office for some group pictures. They’ll be in my newsletter soon enough with a short post.
On Wednesday, we went to Network After Work, a large networking event that was at Seven. I go to those because I get two or three new clients at each event.
After the event, we went to the sushi bar and had sushi. I love the firecracker roll.
She was surprised because she was “on the clock” while networking and even driving to the event, for which she’ll get reimbursed, in addition to parking. And naturally, I paid for her sushi – I mean, employee recreation is one of the few exceptions to the 50% disallowance for meals and entertainment.
But mostly, I’ve been killing it on all sides of life.
I’ve also figured out something about myself:
I tend to cherish a woman who is woman enough to withstand me, and let’s face it, to occasionally keep me in check. With the latter, the ability is more important than the frequency or lack thereof.
Tonight I went out with Allaina and Dennis. I drove, but she was steering. I wanted to go to Seven, but she wanted to go to The Loop which is her favorite dance club.
We were originally going to go to the Hennepin and 7th area – Crave and, I figured, Seven afterwards.
She had different plans. She was starving, apparently a recurring theme, as she’s trying to gain weight (she said she weighs 127 but wants to get all the way up to 132. She was being serious, too).
She recommended some place on Washington and 3rd Ave N called J.D. Hoyt. First of all, the atmosphere was awesome. Nothing particularity special. It was just enjoyable.
Dennis got a couple beers and scallops. I got garlic bread. Allaina got swordfish.
It was amazing! Swordfish is my favorite fish, and it sets the standard. It had a great, non-fishy taste, and it had a meaty texture! Yum!
Then we walked to The Loop and danced there until 1:30.
I’m hoping to get an awesome picture on her phone of me and her. I had a lot of fun!
I have the problem of dancing too much and not just chilling. Meh – it’s a dance club, although I noticed that guys why do dance a ton (meaning jump around) kind of look like idiots.
Since KOOL 108 upgraded to sort of (sometimes) display the song and artist names so I don’t have to Shazam while driving to make sure my guess is right (which it always is, naturally), I decided that I could sort of upgrade my tax website so it’s mobile responsive.
It’s sort of because it’s not pretty, has no branding standards, etc. I’m going to fix that soon, but that won’t be free.
There are some good Christmas songs. I’ll post some:
Skip the whole song until about 4:00.
It’s pretty much the only good version of this song.

This is probably my favorite version of Jingle Bells

And who could forget this scene?
I was at a social happy hour tonight. I didn’t know anyone except one guy, who, in our story, is named Dick. He represents all men who act like a Dick.
Dicks tend to notice that I primarily talk to ladies. I’m not trying to date anyone, but they’re more interesting because they don’t talk about stupid things, and they aren’t immature idiots.
The person I was sitting next to is named Elle. She represents ladies.
I was talking to Elle. Much like Dicks always do, Dick kept trying to get Elle’s attention.
And that’s fine because in 3 minutes, I’d just ask Elle a question about herself, and she switched gears quickly because at this point, Dick has been talking about himself for 3 minutes, not giving Elle a peep because he’s trying to impress Elle.
Elle thinks, like always, Dicks try too hard.
When Elle was talking to me and having good conversation, like an immature Dick would do, he puts hot sauce on his finger to taste it, trying to steal some attention, something I thought was funny in a childish way.
So what do Dicks do when they have a ladies attention? Naturally, he tells a story about himself. It started off about hot sauce, but everyone zoned out after 30 seconds when the story was about him. Again.
When it was time for pictures, I leaned in to be in the group picture. My left arm had to go somewhere – it was either behind Elle’s chair or in front of her chest. I think I made the right decision.
Well like a Dick, he tried to embarrass me in front of everyone by exclaiming (several times), “Whoa! Justin – hugging at the first meetup event?! Jeez!”
I simply explained that my arm was behind her chair and not even touching Elle, who didn’t notice or care, since it was just to get in the photo.
About two minutes after I embarrassed Dick by telling the truth, which invariably makes every Dick look immature, he excused himself.
Usually I just ignore them, which lets their comments affect others because they’re not plainly rejected, but making Dicks look like idiots and standing up for myself works way better.
In general, Dicks feel it’s their duty to protect ladies from me, because I’m obviously aggressive because I like conversation with substance.
Men, don’t be a Dick. Dicks just look like idiots, don’t impress anyone, and never get a girl. Ladies aren’t after Dicks.
